The Joy... of making a documentary

So here it is, the end of March already. We've come a long way since my cousin Rick's Op-Ed was published in The Globe at the end of September. Within a few days, we were shooting interviews in Fenway. That was an amazing experience. We got there around 3 in the afternoon, just in time for a heavy rain that lasted over an hour. It was cold! But on the good side, it gave us a chance to shoot some moody atmospheric shots of an empty Fenway. What a feeling to be there with no one else around. I could feel the history... the ghosts. We also grabbed a few interviews with some rabid fans who were already in their seats, 3 hours early!

After the big Fenway shoot (the Sox won in the bottom of the 9th on a homer by Big Papi), I quickly cut a trailer together and then Rick and I regrouped. What's the film going to be about? Where's the story leading us? Fortunately, Rick is very well-connected in the area of integrative medicine. He's a real player and was able to set up some great interviews with leading scientists. So in January we hit the road for Santa Fe, Phoenix and New York to tape some very important interviews. Once again, I cut a new trailer and we were off and running to make new contacts, begin to explore distribution, and raise funds for the next phases.

We also had some great support from Cynthia Close at Documentary Education Resources. DER is now our fiscal sponsor for the project, which means donations can be tax deductible. Very good news, and they're a great organization.

From a production standpoint, we're shooting on the DVX-100 and 100A, at 24p in 4:3. In each location, we've had some help - an extra DVX shooter in Boston, Santa Fe and Phoenix - to shoot both sides of Rick's interview. To create the trailers, I used Final Cut Pro 5 on my 17" Powerbook with an external 500GB Lacie drive. For our final post, I'm expecting to go to a studio for graphics, color and audio finishing. We are expecting Joy will be ready for broadcast towards the end of summer.

So, that's where we are now - we were hoping to go to Spring Training for some interviews with players, but now we'll hope to pick them up during April and May at Fenway.

Thanks for your support. Any ideas or contacts for distribution, please let us know!
